Who the Dickens?

I finished reading Mister Pip about a week ago, and I’ll get around to writing my thoughts about it one of these days.  The reason I chose to read it in the first place is due to the fact that it contains Great Expectations as a plot device, so, of course, I had to put it near the top of my TBR pile.  I have enjoyed Dickens practically since I was old enough to read, and “Oliver!” was my favorite film when I was little kid.  My favorite Dickens novel is David Copperfield, which I absolutely must reread very soon.

Film adaptations of Dickens novels abound, and I have seen quite a few of them, some good, some horrible.  In honor of Mr. Dickens and Mister Pip, I have decided to hold a little contest to see how knowledgeable YOU are on the subject of Dickens movies.  I will post photos of actors who have appeared in Dickens films.  If you want to play, leave a comment listing the actor’s real name and the name of the character he played.  (i.e. —  John Travolta, Nicholas Nickelby).  The first correct guesser of all the actors wins a choice of one of these fabulous prizes:

Are you ready?  Here we go!  And remember, I want the actor and the character he played.  Good luck!

  1. Is this an open book test? 😀

    I know not a one…in fact, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Dickens film.

  2. Drats, Jillora! Look the stuff up. Do you know the actors?

  3. I can’t wait to see your thoughts on Mr. Pip. I loved that book!

    Lezlie

  4. #1-Ethan Hawke-Pip
    #2-George C. Scott-Mr. Scrooge
#3-Daniel Radcliffe-I didn’t know Dickens wrote Harry Potter!
    #4-??
#5-Not sure, but he looks like he could have played Uriah Heep at some point
    #6-Elijah Wood-The Artful Dodger
#7-That kid from “Eight is Enough”?-Oliver?

Anyone who wants to build on my list should feel free to do so and take whatever credit they want. (Although, I do love the WWUHD shirt.)

  5. 1. Ethan Hawke – Pip
    2. George C. Scott – Scrooge
    3. Daniel Radcliffe – David Copperfield
    4. Oliver Reed – Bill Sikes
    5. Michael York – voice of Bob Cratchit (1997), voice of Murdstone (1993), Pip (1974)
    6. Elijah Wood – Artful Dodger
    7. Jack Wild – Artful Dodger

The video collection sure looks wonderful!

  6. Yay, Riva, you got it! Which prize do you want? The DVD has the Radcliffe David Copperfield production, along with a couple of others.

Also, since Dreamybee got some of them right, I’ve decided to give her the leftover prize. Aren’t I nice?

So, Riva, let me know here in the comments and we’ll go from there. Woot!

  7. It’s a good thing that Riva won, because I didn’t have a clue. Like sofdrink, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a film based on one of Dickens’ novels. I should probably remedy that shouldn’t I? 🙂

  8. Jeez, Joy and Jill, where have you been?

As a sidenote, weren’t Oliver Reed’s eyes incredible? I developed a little crush on him when I saw the movie, even though he was the bad guy and murdered Nancy and kidnapped Oliver.

There was just something about him…

  9. I thought I left a comment on here before, but it looks like I’m wrong once again. Riva’s lucky she got here before me, because I would have won this one! Just kidding. I was totally clueless.

  10. Congrats to the winners! I didn’t know any aside from George Scott, and I had a terrible time scrolling down past the awesomeness of Ethan 🙂

  11. Wasn’t Ethan Hawke Finnegan Bell in Great Expectations? I really liked that adaptation.

  12. Dreamybee has already mentioned that she covets the t-shirt, so I’ll take the DVD.

And, yes, Oliver Reed has GORGEOUS eyes.

  13. I had a crush on Oliver Reed back then myself, even though Bill Sykes was so awful. Luckily Athos was a more gallant man. That is a fabulous pic.

  14. Ummm, no…I didn’t know any of the actors, either…although one of them looks a little like Harry Potter.

I’ll just go climb back under my rock now. At least I have Joy to keep me company.

    -Jillora

  15. Actually, Care’s right about Ethan Hawke. If she would like the shirt instead, that would be fine, otherwise, I’ll be happy to accept it. Thanks, Chartroose!

  16. DreamyBee please take the tee!!! and congratulations. I’m really not sure who Uriah Heap is so the tee shirt would be a burden to me. I was just clarifying – not entering this contest…. I’ll shut up now.

  17. WHOA! I just noticed your avatar is in the url box! how did you do that? What did I miss? cool.

  18. I’m giving Riva the DVD and Dreamy the tee. Care doesn’t get anything because she still hasn’t sent her dog to me.

Geez, Care, I said it could be COD, so what’s the problem here?

  19. Hi Chartroose,

I would like a medium military green, please. I sent you my address earlier at your Yahoo address (’cause that’s the one listed here) and I tried to email you at your wordpress address but it came back undeliverable, so let me know if you still need anything.

    Mahalo!

  20. I don’t want anything. You cannot have my dog. so BTHBHBHTHHTHTHHTB. (Raspberries.)
